“Boudoir” is the French word for private room. It originated from the French verb, “to pout.” Long before the camera was invented, artists would create portraits of women in these “private rooms” in various states of undress to represent the beauty of the female form.
In the early 1900’s, the camera allowed more women to have the opportunity to participate in boudoir photography. The style also grew to include “pinup” poses, which began in the early 20th century and reached its peak of popularity in the 1940’s during World War II.
In the 1980’s, boudoir photography hit mainstream America with retail giant Glamour Shots® leading the way. Boudoir photography now had a reach beyond art galleries and magazines. It was available to any woman willing to pay for sitting fees, styling and portraits.
Today, there is a new resurgence of boudoir photography incorporating the best practices of each historical era. It’s artistic. The locations for the “boudoir” are stunning. You see vintage pinup poses with a contemporary twist, reminiscent of the days of Jean Harlow and Rita Hayworth.
